But I can’t complain. My life’s pretty okay. I live in a nice house, with plenty of grass out front. There’s a beach nearby and that’s where I shine, running and jumping and swimming in the ocean. I’m the only one who doesn’t get cold. I sleep on the bed with my human. And sometimes his girlfriend sleeps there. That’s when they make me leave the room. Dogs don’t have to mate behind closed doors.
My human, the one who wrote Hounded, really is a great guy, I more than like him, but he got a lot wrong in that book, mostly about me! He wrote that I destroyed the girlfriend’s garden and chewed up the fancy bag, made from a dead animal, that he got her for Christmas. I have to call poop on that. I might have sniffed those things once or twice. That’s my job, security. But she wanted to send me back to the shelter, and that is something I would kill to keep from happening… I don’t mean kill, but I would… be very, very unhappy.
And there’s other things; My walks are too short. Sometimes, they drag me back home when I’ve barely sniffed a bush. The food situation is cruel. The girlfriend is a great cook and they eat right in front of me while I’m gagging on dog food, and who knows what’s actually in that stuff. I have almost no freedom. I’m controlled by others. I don’t get to decide when I go on a walk or when I eat or whether I’m stinky enough for a bath. And I’m not the only dog with a beef. I network at the dog park, and there’s all sorts of things that bother us - I’m just the only one who talks about it.
Anyway, it’s nice to let off a little steam. Thanks for reading. And remember, if you do buy Hounded, the dog in the book is not the real me…. who I am is friendly, gentle, an ideal companion, and I hope a voice for dogs everywhere.
